Roberts-Miller defines Motivism as "the assertion that people don't really have reasons for what they do, but they are motivated by something else- some dark motive" (83). What Roberts-Miller means by this is that demagogues often place blame on the opposing view and those who support it, saying that they have motives that might not be in the best intrest for all of those involved.  This becomes a problem because the out-group receives all of the blame in this situation. The speakers opinion is seen as pure, they can and have done no wrong. LaPierre places blame on media for a lot of the gun violence. In his speech, LaPierre places much of the blame for gun violence in America today. LaPierre states "through vicious, violent video games with names like Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse. And here's one: it's called Kindergarten Killers. It's been online for 10 years. How come my research department could find it and a ll of yours either couldn't or didn't want anyone to know you had found it" (14). In this statement, LaPierre is attacking the entertainment industry, claiming that the extreme use of violent graphics in video games could be a cause of the high crime rates involving guns in America today. This might be false because the entertainment industry creates these video games purely for entertainment value. America is not the leading consumer for video games, in fact they are not even on the forefront. LaPierre might be taking video game content a little too seriously and blaming it for a large portion of the problems in America when it has little effect. The Kindergarten Killers video game has barely been viewed on the internet. There is no real correlation between this crudely made internet game and the killings that have taken place in Sandy Hook or in any schools in America. There is no real reason why the media should pay any attention to this video game, because there has not been any attention put on the game by a large amount of people. In another example, LaPierre states" ...and here's another dirty little truth that the media try their best to conceal: There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against it's own people" (13). This quotation from LaPierre's speech almost directly correlated with the definition of Motivism. LaPierre claims that media in America has dark secrets that they are trying to conceal. LaPierre does his best to reveal the so-called "hidden agenda" that the media tries to conceal. LaPierre uses the reputation that the media often holds in society regularly. Because his speech was presented so closely after the shooting was held, the facts that he uses to defend the people hit home much harder because of the raw emotion. LaPierre plays closely to the emotions that people already feel for the media and the recent tragedy. This could be most problematic because he does not concede for the media and video game company. He does not see their side or understand the true meaning of their buisness.
